HAVEN's Origin and History
HAVEN of Tioga County began in the fall of 1984 when three groups (the Mansfield branch of the American Association of University Women, the Women’s Resource Network, and the local chapter of the National Organization of Women) joined together in an effort to provide a network of “safe houses” for local victims of domestic violence. We began with many dedicated volunteers, a phone line, office space donated by a local church, and space in three private homes as shelter.
In 1996, we were able to open Hope House, a permanent shelter to provide safe respite for victims and their children. In 1999 we were able to hire a staff Attorney to assist with domestic violence and sexual assault issues. In the late 1990’s the formerly known Tioga County Women’s Coalition was renamed to HAVEN (Helping Abuse and Violence End Now) of Tioga County to show more inclusivity, as we serve all genders.
We have continued to grow throughout the years to include a satellite location in Mansfield which was obtained in 2016. In 2016, we began to focus on prevention of abuse, so prevention education efforts became a core service. In November 2018, HAVEN hired a licensed therapist and was able to begin providing trauma therapy.

Over the years we have developed a strong direct services program with professionals who are specifically trained in domestic violence and sexual assault issues to provide appropriate support and an education and outreach program that provides learning opportunities for area schools, civic organizations, and the community as a whole.
